In a remarkable feat of engineering, overnight the tournament's two courts were merged into one, but the change did not seem to bother Giorgi, who followed up her second round win over No.2 seed Roberta Vinci with another impressive performance.

The Italian, whose best showings on tour prior to this week had been fourth round runs at the US Open and Wimbledon, required less than an hour to brush aside Peer, 61 64. Meeting her for a place in the final will be No.3 seed Carla Suárez Navarro, who saw off Magdalena Rybarikova in the evening's final match on the new Centre Court.

"I think it's a special tournament. It's amazing what they did to the court in so little time," Suárez Navarro said about the court transformation. "We got the chance to try it this morning and I liked it and found my rhythm quickly."

Suárez Navarro had lost two of her three previous encounters with Rybarikova, including last year indoors in Luxembourg, but was always one step ahead this time. Early breaks in each set sent the Spaniard on her way and in the end she ran out a comfortable 62 63 winner.

"The match was good and I played at a high level against a very talented player. I needed to play well because sometimes it's difficult to play her. But I'm happy I played well and I'm in the next round," she added.

Earlier in the day, top seed and home favorite Agnieszka Radwanska kept her title bid on course with a 64 61 win over Yvonne Meusburger. Her opponent in the last four will be Alizé Cornet after she won a topsy-turvy encounter with Klara Koukalova, 62 06 62.
