On a rain-ravaged opening day in the Malaysian capital, Kovinic triumphed 64 62 to book a second round meeting with either No.4 seed Patricia Mayr-Achleitner or Eri Hozumi.

Before the heavens opened, there was an upset brewing in the only other singles match to make it on court, as qualifier Lyudmyla Kichenok opened up a 5-2 lead over No.8 seed Ayumi Morita.

In the doubles No.2 seeds Darija Jurak and Megan Moulton-Levy continued their recent run of good form with a comfortable 60 64 victory over Nicha Lertpitaksinchai and Peangtarn Plipuech. No.4 seeds Chan Yung-Jan and Zheng Saisai also advanced, proving far too strong for wildcards Cagla Buyukakcay and Pemra Ozgen, whom they beat, 60 61.

Play on Tuesday will begin earlier than previously scheduled, at midday, with Zhang Shuai, Karolina Pliskova, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Donna Vekic among those in action.
