STUTTGART, Germany - Flavia Pennetta got past Andrea Petkovic in a see-saw affair in the final first round match of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Wednesday.

The Plot
Petkovic came into this clash in her best form in years, riding a seven-match win streak dating back to her run to her biggest WTA title in Charleston. Pennetta also has been impressive in 2014, with her season highlighted by her biggest WTA title in Indian Wells and quarterfinal runs at the Australian Open and Dubai. However, the Italian did lose early at her last two events in Miami and Monterrey.

The Turning Point
Down 5-4 in the first set, Pennetta won three straight games to take the set but from 3-3 in the second set, Petkovic won three straight games to force a decider. That's when Pennetta took over, racing out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 75 36 61 triumph.

By The Numbers
Aces were a key statistic, with Pennetta firing 10 of them and Petkovic recording none. That helped Pennetta win their first match in four years and even their head-to-head at 2-2.

What's Next
No.5 seed Jelena Jankovic awaits Pennetta in the second round. While the Serb has a 6-2 record in their head-to-head, Pennetta did win their lone previous tilt in Stuttgart en route to a semifinal showing in 2009.
