Jankovic Tops Pennetta In Stuttgart

The Plot
Pennetta came into this clash with 165 clay court match wins, second-most among active players, while Jankovic's 134 was fifth-most. And though Jankovic had a 6-2 lead in their head-to-head, Pennetta had won two of the last three, including their lone previous meeting in Stuttgart in 2009. The fifth-seeded Jankovic was seeking to make at least the quarterfinals for the sixth time in her last seven WTA events. Since winning her biggest WTA title at Indian Wells, Pennetta had lost prior to the quarterfinals in her last two events, so was looking to avoid making it three straight.

The Turning Point
After getting broken to lose the first set, Jankovic took back the momentum right away in breaking Pennetta's serve twice in a row en route to a 3-0 second set lead. And she broke Pennetta in the Italian's second service game of the third set, going on to a 36 62 63 victory.

By The Numbers
Jankovic made 66% of her first serves compared to just 31% for Pennetta, leading to lots of break point opportunities. She converted on five of 11, while Pennetta made good on just three of nine on the Serb's serve.

What's Next
Jankovic will look for her third straight win against Alisa Kleybanova, though the Russian has won three of seven overall in their head-to-head. And Kleybanova comes into this encounter fresh off a defeat of World No.6 Petra Kvitova, her first Top 10 win in over three years.
