10 Things To Know: Oeiras
Carla Suárez Navarro

Every week on wtatennis.com we'll bring you 10 of the most important things to know for the week - who's playing, upcoming milestones... this week the Road To Singapore goes through Oeiras.

1) The WTA heads to Oeiras for the Portugal Open this week.
The International-level Portugal Open kicks off on Monday and runs through Saturday.

2) Four Top 20 players are in Oeiras.
Carla Suárez Navarro, Eugenie Bouchard, Sam Stosur and Roberta Vinci are the Top 4 seeds, with Kaia KanepiLucie Safarova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Vesnina No.5 through No.8.

3) Suárez Navarro has unfinished business here.
Suárez Navarro is hoping the wrist injury that forced her to retire in the quarterfinals of Stuttgart on Friday is okay now, because she the favorite for her first WTA title this week. She's 0-5 in her career in WTA finals, and was actually a runner-up here the last two years, in 2012 (falling to Kanepi after holding double match point in the second set) and 2013 (falling to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova).

4) Suárez Navarro could become the WTA's match win leader this week.
Suárez Navarro has 21 WTA-level match wins on the year and could potentially add five this week. She's three short of the co-leaders - Agnieszka Radwanska and Dominika Cibulkova each have 24.

5) There are a lot of dangerous floaters in the draw.
Several former Top 20 players - Yanina Wickmayer, Peng Shuai, Alisa Kleybanova - are also in the draw, as well as both of last week's Marrakech finalists, María-Teresa Torró-Flor and Romina Oprandi.

6) The first all-Chinese WTA final took place in Oeiras.
In 2006 the first all-Chinese final in WTA history took place here, with Zheng Jie beating Li Na by retirement when the future World No.2 had to retire due to heat illness. The second all-Chinese WTA final took place just a few months ago on home soil in Shenzhen - Li beat Peng Shuai in that one.

7) The doubles draw is packed, too.
Two of the best doubles teams from the last few years - Cara Black and Sania Mirza, and Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond - are among the 16 teams in the draw. Check out the full doubles draw here.

8) The WTA stars are heading to Madrid this week too.
The Premier Mandatory-level Mutua Madrid Open kicks off on Saturday, with the draw ceremony taking place on Friday. At the moment, the entire Top 20 - minus one very notable name - is entered.

9) WTA Trivia: Hard To Repeat In Oeiras...
This is the 16th year Oeiras has been a WTA stop, and among its 15 previous editions there have been 14 different champions. Only one player has won this tournament twice - who is it?

10) Go to WTA Live powered by TennisTV later this week to watch live action from Oeiras.

Magui Serna

* WTA Trivia answer: It's Magüi Serna, who won back-to-back titles here in 2002 and 2003. Though she only won three WTA titles in her career - she also won Budapest in 2003 - the Spanish lefty did make it as high as No.19 in the world in 2004 and had several famous upsets on big stages, including beating then-World No.3 Mary Pierce at Wimbledon in 2000 (and making the quarterfinals).
