OEIRAS, Portugal - Qualifier Timea Bacsinszky caused the first major upset of this year's Portugal Open when she knocked out No.3 seed Samantha Stosur.

The Plot
After finishing 2013 with a flourish, Stosur has struggled for form in the opening months of the new campaign, arriving for her first engagement of the European clay court season having not won back-to-back matches since the Australian Open.

Unlike Stosur, Bacsinszky has been chalking up the wins lately, a number of deep runs on the ITF Circuit edging her ranking back towards the Top 100 following a succession of injury-plagued years.

The Turning Point
Playing her first WTA event of the year, there were a few early jitters from Bacsinszky, who hit a double fault to drop her opening service game. However, she soon settled into the task at hand, rattling off five of the next six games before calmly serving out the set.

In the second set, she continued to make a mockery of her ranking of No.165, going from strength to strength and wrapping up a 6-4, 6-0 win after just one hour and 12 minutes on court.

Quotes
"I tried from the beginning not to be surprised by the spin, because she gets so much topspin on her shots and also her serve," Bacsinszky said. "So I was really focused on sticking to the baseline and not going further back and also moving into the court whenever I got the chance.

"It's not so easy to play here because there's a lot of wind, and I think my matches in qualifying helped me get used to it."

What's Next
Bacsinszky, who on Saturday was two points from defeat in the first round of qualifying, now faces wildcard Ons Jabeur for a place in her first WTA quarterfinal since 2010.
