Serena Eyes Three-Peat In Madrid

How is Serena Williams feeling going into Madrid? Has she won a WTA event three years in a row before? Want to see highlights from last year's final?

MADRID, Spain - Serena Williams comes into this year's Mutua Madrid Open with a few question marks. Sure, she has had one of the best starts to the year of anyone, already picking up Premier-level titles at Brisbane and Miami, and she has a big cushion at No.1. But the last time she took the court, losing her opening match in Charleston a month ago, she sounded uncharacteristically burnt out.

"I need some weeks off where I don't think about tennis and can kind of regroup," she said. "I'm going to go on a vacation, for sure. I need some time off. I just need to take a deep breath and regroup.

"I think it will actually help me for the rest of the clay court season coming up."

But in a recent interview with madrid-open.com, Williams sounded refreshed, regrouped and hungry.

"You can't go through life and not continue to learn something. I feel like every day you should grow, so there are still things for me to learn in tennis. Just how to be better and how to be consistent.

"As you grow, you have different goals - and I have different goals now."

Williams won her milestone 50th WTA title in Madrid last year, and this year she'll go for another milestone - she's chasing the 60th WTA title of her career at the Premier Mandatory-level tournament.

"It feels cool to join in with legends on important tennis records," Williams commented. "These players are really historic players that you never think you could do anything as awesome as they are.

"Honestly, I feel almost shocked - like, really? Me? It doesn't seem real."

Additionally, Williams will be trying to win a WTA event three years in a row for just the second time in her career. She conquered Miami three straight years a decade ago - 2002, 2003 and 2004.
