While many WTA stars are in Europe preparing for the Mutua Madrid Open, Bethanie Mattek-Sands is back in New York recovering from left hip surgery. Mattek-Sands had the procedure performed under the watchful eyes of the physicians from the New York Hospital for Special Surgery.

Mattek-Sands has been riddled with injuries over the past few seasons. She's had two hip surgeries now, a severe shoulder injury, a broken foot, and knee surgery.

"A lot of players by this point might have folded up and said, 'I'm not doing this,'" said Mattek-Sands' husband Justin.

Mattek-Sands plans on returning to her home in Phoenix, Arizona, for rehab and hopes she can be back on tour this fall.
