Venus Williams will miss the Mutua Madrid Open as she continues her recovery from a recent illness.

An ongoing illness has ruled Venus Williams out of the upcoming Mutua Madrid Open.

Williams, who was forced to miss Madrid last year with a back injury, joins World No.4 Victoria Azarenka on the absentee list for the Premier Mandatory event, which starts on Saturday.

After a couple of years blighted by illness and injury - most notably her battle with the autoimmune disease, Sjögren's syndrome - Williams made a bright start to 2014. 

However, since winning in Dubai at the end of February, the American has played only two tournaments, losing in the last 16 in both Miami and Charleston before withdrawing from Kuala Lumpur to recover from a strep throat infection.

Her next scheduled tournament is Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, which begins a week on Monday.
