Monday, First Round

Manolo Santana
[3] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL #3) vs. Eugenie Bouchard (CAN #18)
Head-to-head: first meeting
Arguably Madrid's most compelling first round encounter involves a likely future Top 5 player against a current one.

Eugenie Bouchard's breakout season, which has included 20 match wins, has been highlighted by a semifinal run at the Australian Open and her Top 20 debut. The youngest player in the Top 20 has four Top 10 wins to her credit, with her best so far coming over No.8 Jelena Jankovic in Charleston last month. Agnieszka Radwanska has yet to win a WTA title in 2014, but is consistently going deep into draws. In fact, her 24 match wins this season are tied for second-most on the WTA.

"I played great matches in Fed Cup in Barcelona on Spanish clay," Radwanska said. "It was a different surface in Stuttgart, but I played very good matches there too. I just hope to play at the same level here, where the clay is a bit faster."

[2] Li Na (CHN #2) vs. Kirsten Flipkens (BEL #24)
Head-to-head:
first meeting
Li Na will be eager to get back on the winning track in Madrid, where last year for the first time here she lost in the first round, going down in surprisingly easy fashion against Madison Keys. Though she has a superb 21-3 record this year, including two titles, this will actually be her first clay court match of 2014, as an injury kept her out of Stuttgart.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Li said. "After Miami, my body needed time to recover. I had my knee checked out, and now I think I'm ready for the clay court season."

The crafty Kirsten Flipkens will be looking for her fourth Top 10 win and the best of her career, with a defeat of No.5 Samantha Stosur at 's-Hertogenbosch in 2012 her greatest so far.

Pista 5
[9] Dominika Cibulkova (SVK #10) vs. Samantha Stosur (AUS #19)
Head-to-head: Stosur leads 3-0
On paper, Dominika Cibulkova is the clear favorite to get past Samantha Stosur, however, an examination of their head-to-head tells a different story. Cibulkova has not captured a set in their three matches. That being said, their last meeting was in 2012, and Cibulkova has come a long way since then, with her terrific 2014 season already including a title in Acapulco, runner-up showings at the Australian Open and Kuala Lumpur, a semifinal run in Miami and her Top 10 debut.

Former US Open champion Stosur could use an infusion of confidence, as she comes into Madrid in the midst of a four-match losing streak.

Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki looks for her seventh win in seven meetings with Ekaterina Makarova and fresh off her first WTA title in Oeiras, Carla Suárez Navarro gets her Mutua Madrid Open campaign started against Yvonne Meusburger. No.4 seed Simona Halep and No.6 seed Jelena Jankovic are also in action.
