MADRID, Spain - Svetlana Kuznetsova and Samantha Stosur had noteworthy days Monday at the Mutua Madrid Open, following up first round singles wins by uniting for a victory in their doubles opener.

Stosur upset Dominika Cibulkova and Kuznetsova beat Alizé Cornet early in the day. Later, Kuznetsova and Stosur routed Caroline Garcia and Klaudia Jans-Ignacik, 6-2, 6-1, in 50 minutes. After losing the first two games, they won 12 of the next 13 and converted on six of 10 break point opportunities compared to just one of five for their opponents.

This is the seventh event of Kuznetsova and Stosur's partnership, which has been highlighted by the 2013 Moscow title and a semifinal run at Indian Wells earlier this year. Their Indian Wells campaign included an upset of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, whom they play next in Madrid.

Other first round doubles winners included Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova, Klara Koukalova and Monica Niculescu and Francesca Schiavone and Sílvia Soler-Espinosa.

Medina Garrigues and Shvedova's 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Daniela Hantuchova and Arantxa Parra Santonja was their 20th win as a duo and set up a second round encounter with third-seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Koukalova and Niculescu, whose eighth place spot is one ahead of Medina Garrigues and Shvedova on the Road To Singapore doubles leaderboard, were 6-4, 6-3 winners over Irina-Camelia Begu and Oksana Kalashnikova.

Schiavone and Soler-Espinosa's 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Varvara Lepchenko and Vladimira Uhlirova set up a second round clash with top-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.

Tuesday's schedule includes a showdown involving reigning Miami champions Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki against defending Madrid champions Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova.
