MADRID, Spain - No.5 seed Petra Kvitova shook off a forgettable first set against former Top 20 player Varvara Lepchenko on Tuesday to reach the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open.

The Plot
After falling in her opener in Stuttgart in her 2014 clay court debut, Kvitova needed a third set tie-break to get past Sorana Cirstea in the first round here. Lepchenko also got her first clay court win of the year against clay court specialist Anabel Medina Garrigues in her Madrid opener.

Kvitova is no stranger to success in Madrid, as her lone WTA clay court title came here in 2011, and she is actually the only past Madrid champion in this year's draw besides Serena Williams. In Lepchenko's best Madrid outing, she went all the way from qualifying to the quarterfinals in 2012. Kvitova had won all four of her previous contests against Lepchenko, though the last time they faced off in Beijing last year she did surrender a set for the first time.

The Turning Point
Down 2-1 in the first set, Lepchenko reeled off five straight games. But then after a couple of holds to start the second set, Kvitova won three straight games to take control, and in fact dropped just two games the rest of the way for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.

By The Numbers
Kvitova never had a break point opportunity in the first set, but in the second and third sets converted on four of five chances, while Lepchenko made good on just two of eight for the match.

What's Next
Kvitova takes on fellow Czech Lucie Safarova, whom she is 3-0 against but has never played on clay.
