Wildcards Upset Hsieh & Peng

MADRID, SPAIN - Twenty-four hours after being confirmed as the new co-World No.1s, Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai suffered a shock defeat to wildcards Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro in the semifinals of the Mutua Madrid Open.

Results this week in the Spanish capital have guaranteed that Hsieh will join Peng atop the rankings on Monday, but their celebrations were cut short by a stirring fightback from their unfancied Spanish opponents.

Having already dispensed with two seeded teams already, Muguruza and Suárez Navarro were brimming with confidence in front of their home fans, riding an early storm to pip the top seeds, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.

"It was a very important match and at the beginning we were a little bit nervous and they were also playing very well, so it was difficult," Suárez Navarro said. "But we got better as the match went on and finished it very well.

"We're very excited about the final. It's in front of our home supporters and it's the biggest match we have played together so we just want to enjoy it."

Standing between them and the title will be No.2 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. After a mid-season slumber, the return to clay has awakened Errani and Vinci, who saw off Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova, 7-6(7), 2-6, 10-8, to extend their winning streak to seven matches.
