Eugenie Bouchard

ROME, Italy - First round action in the Eternal City gets underway on Monday, with Eugenie Bouchard, Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams among those in action.

[17] Eugenie Bouchard (CAN #20) vs. Francesca Schiavone (ITA #61)
first meeting
Francesca Schiavone has endured a difficult start to the year and enters this week with just three wins to her name. She will have her work cut out adding to this tally in Rome, where she has been drawn against the high-flying Eugenie Bouchard.

The winning combination of attacking instincts on the court and girl-next-door charm off it has seen Bouchard rapidly establish herself as one of tennis' hottest properties. She has looked good on the clay, too, reaching the semi and quarterfinals in Charleston and Oeiras, respectively.

Venus Williams (USA #32) vs. Annika Beck (GER #48)
first meeting
Despite her recent travails, Venus Williams never once contemplated packing it in. And in Dubai she was rewarded for her dedication when she cruised to the 45th title of her brilliant career. However, since then, the American has played only two tournaments, losing in the last 16 in both Miami and Charleston before withdrawing from Kuala Lumpur and Madrid.

Her opening round opponent, Annika Beck, lost in the first round to Magdalena Rybarikova last year and arrives for her second visit on the back of a promising start to the season that has already seen her make the semifinals in Shenzhen and the third round in Indian Wells.

[11] Ana Ivanovic (SRB #13) vs. [WC] Karin Knapp (ITA #51)
first meeting
Karin Knapp is no stranger to success on clay, having reached six semifinals on the surface, but she will need to rediscover her A-game if she is to make any impression on an in-form Ana Ivanovic. Fresh from promising performances in Stuttgart and Madrid, the Serb is high on confidence and in the best form since her annus mirabilis of 2008.

Following a bright end to 2013, Knapp has struggled for form of late but goes into her first meeting with Ivanovic on a seven-match losing streak.

Also on court...
Home favorite Flavia Pennetta takes on Yvonne Meusburger in the evening session on Centrale, while over on Grandstand Samantha Stosur faces Sabine Lisicki.
