ROME, Italy - Sara Errani booked her place in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Chanelle Scheepers on Monday afternoon.

The Plot
In the past two years, Errani has carved out a reputation as one of the WTA's leading exponents of clay court tennis, picking up six titles on the surface. Scheepers is also no stranger to success on the dirt, reaching three WTA semifinals on the surface, the most recent coming earlier this season in Bogotá.

The Turning Point
Following an earlier-than-expected loss in Madrid, Errani started tentatively against Scheepers, losing the first three games before belatedly finding her rhythm. A run of four straight games helped her overturn an early deficit to take the opening set, as her endless retrieving and miserly unforced error count began to frustrate the South African. The second set was a more straightforward affair, a couple of early breaks helping Errani to her 18th win of the season.

By The Numbers
Errani was more aggressive than usual, particularly in the second set, against Scheepers and was rewarded with 23 winners. However, this increased potency did come at a cost, with the Italian No.1 also committing 24 unforced errors.

What's Next
Meeting Errani in the second round will be either doubles partner Roberta Vinci or Ekaterina Makarova.
