ROME, Italy - World No.11 Sara Errani recorded a surprisingly routine triumph over former Top 20 player Ekaterina Makarova on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

The Plot
A lot is at stake for the 10th-seeded and former Roland Garros runner-up Errani this week, as she is defending semifinal points from last year, and this is the last week of results that will be figured into French Open seedings. Her Rome campaign began with a straight set defeat of Chanelle Scheepers, while Makarova beat Errani's doubles partner, Roberta Vinci.

The Turning Point
Errani may have had revenge on her mind, as she lost her last two encounters with Makarova, including most recently in the third round of Miami earlier this year. This time, she seized the momentum from the get-go, winning eight of the match's first nine points as she went up an early break. She also went up an early break in the second set at 1-1 and never relinquished it en route to the 6-2, 6-3 victory.

By The Numbers
Errani was four of six on break point opportunities and never faced one on her own serve. She also surrendered just seven points on her first serve.

Quotes
"I'm very happy with my match today," Errani said. "It was not easy, as it was very windy, but I played very well.

"I saw Makarova's match against Vinci and tried to find tactics to use today. I think they worked."

What's Next
Errani will take on Czech qualifier Petra Cetkovska, whom she lost to in tight three-setters in each of their previous two match-ups.

"I had match points against Cetkovska in the past," Errani said. "It will be a tough match for sure. She's a very good player and is playing very well."
