ROME, Italy - Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova knocked out top seeds and defending champions Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Thursday.

Since being confirmed as co-World No.1s last week, things have not exactly gone to plan for Hsieh and Peng, whose 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Medina Garrigues and Shvedova follows hot on the heels of a surprise exit in Madrid at the hands of Carla Suárez Navarro and Garbiñe Muguruza.

After an early exchange of breaks, a run of three straight games saw Medina Garrigues and Shvedova take charge of the set. They continued to dominate proceedings in the second, breaking serve three more times to run out surprisingly comfortable victors after only an hour and 15 minutes on court.

There were no such surprises in store for last year's runners-up, as Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci continued their excellent start to the clay court season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Darija Jurak and Megan Moulton-Levy.

This was Errani and Vinci's ninth straight win and sets up a rematch with their victims in last month's Stuttgart final, Cara Black and Sania Mirza.

Elsewhere, there were wins for No.3 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, who edged past wildcard pairing Jelena Jankovic and Alisa Kleybanova, 7-5, 6-4, and No.8 seeds Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who saw off Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, 6-4, 6-4.
