The 6-4, 6-2 win was Kerber's first of the clay court season and sets up a meeting with fellow German Anna-Lena Friedsam.

"I've never played against her," Kerber said about her second round opponent. "I think it will be interesting to play against another German here in Germany. I'm looking forward to it and hope that I can have some more matches before Paris."

Despite breaking in the opening game, recent defeats in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome seemed to be playing on the top seed's mind early on. However, after coming through a tough service game at 3-2, she began to settle, closing out the first set before easing through a more one-sided second.

"I think she was playing very well and I was struggling to find my rhythm at first," she added. "The sixth game in the opening set was very close and she had some chances. But I just tried to play my game and in the end I found my rhythm. For the first round, it was a good match."

A few hours after Kerber got her campaign up and running, No.2 seed Eugenie Bouchard booked her place in the quarterfinals. Bouchard arrived in Nürnberg on the back of a couple of early exits on the clay, but was brimming with confidence in her second round encounter with Anastasia Rodionova, wrapping up a 6-0, 6-1 win in just 45 minutes.

Meeting Bouchard in the last eight will be Yaroslava Shvedova, who upset No.6 seed Kurumi Nara, 6-4, 6-2, while there were also wins for Karin Knapp and Karolina Pliskova.
