NÜRNBERG, Germany - Mona Barthel avenged two previous losses this season to fellow German Annika Beck with a victory on Wednesday in the second round of the NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP.

Two days after getting past Belinda Bencic for her first WTA main draw win since the Australian Open, Barthel fired eight aces and from 4-2 down in the second set won four straight games for a 6-2, 6-4 win over the eighth-seeded Beck. That put her into her first WTA quarterfinal since her run to the Paris [Indoors] title in February 2013.

"It was difficult against Annika," Barthel said. "You have to fight for every single point. But I served very well and that was the difference.

"Knowing each other well and getting along well off court makes it hard to play, but we are tennis pros and we have to manage that."

Next up for Barthel is No.4 seed Elina Svitolina, who fought off five set points in the first set of her 7-6(5), 6-3 triumph over Spanish qualifier Beatriz García Vidagany.

"Svitolina is a young, aspiring player, but I was able to beat her this year in Hobart," Barthel said of the WTA's highest-ranked teen.

Also moving on was seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia, whose 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 defeat of Dinah Pfizenmaier was her 13th win in her last 14 matches.

No.1 seed Angelique Kerber was also victorious over fellow German Anna-Lena Friedsam, 6-2, 7-6(0).

Among those securing doubles semifinal berths were No.1 seeds and nine-time WTA titlists Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.
