PARIS, France - No.8 seed Angelique Kerber put her recent struggles behind her to defeat Katarzyna Piter, 6-3, 6-1, in the opening round of the French Open.

The Plot
Following a string of early exits, Kerber arrived in Paris short on wins and confidence, with her most recent outing ending in rather bizarre fashion at the hands of Karolina Pliskova in Strasbourg. Luckily for the German, the draw paired her with Piter, who had endured an equally frustrating clay court season, failing to make it through qualifying in Marrakech, Madrid, Rome or Nürnberg.

The Turning Point
In her loss to Pliskova, Kerber was guilty of not taking her chances, and it was a similar story in the early goings on Suzanne Lenglen. However, after eventually taking a see-saw first set, the German settled, producing a far more polished display to romp through the second and into the next round.

What's Next
There she meets Varvara Lepchenko, who beat Petra Cetkovska, 6-4, 6-1 in the day's final match on Court 2. Lepchenko has won four of the pair's five meetings, although Kerber came out on top when they last crossed paths, 12 months ago in Paris.
