PARIS, France - No.9 seed Dominika Cibulkova overcame a slow start to defeat Virginie Razzano, 7-5, 6-0, in the first round of the French Open.

The Plot
While the evidence ahead of Cibulkova's first round meeting with Razzano pointed to only one result, in Paris, logic does not always count for a great deal. Indeed, Cibulkova needed only to cast her mind back a couple of years to Virginie Razzano's stunning upset of Serena Williams for a reminder of the dangers posed to a seed by an inspired Frenchwoman and a partisan crowd.

The Turning Point
For much of the first set, it looked like Razzano was in the mood to repeat the feat, as she more than held her own against her higher-ranked opponent. However, despite breaking for 4-3 and 5-4 leads, Razzano was unable to ram home her advantage, dropping serve immediately on both occasions.

This lack of a killer instinct came back to haunt the World No.78 as Cibulkova pinched the set from under her nose before piling on the misery by running away with a one-sided second set.

Quotes
"You know, it wasn't easy today. I was prepared for a really tough match, because Virginie, she's a great player. With her, you never know," Cibulkova said. "At 5-4 on her serve, I just changed a little bit on my return. I went a little bit forward to giver her less time.

"So there was a change that really pumped me up, and then I won a few games and I started to get more confidence. That's what happens when I play well and when I get more confidence."

What's Next
In the second round, Cibulkova will face qualifier Tamira Paszek, who overcame Alison Van Uytvanck, 6-2, 7-6(5), to record her first Grand Slam win since the 2013 Australian Open.
