PARIS, France - French No.1 Alizé Cornet made a confident start to her 10th Roland Garros campaign, brushing aside Ashleigh Barty in less than an hour on Philippe Chatrier.

The Plot
Perched at her highest ranking in over five years, Cornet arrived in Paris with high hopes of surpassing her previous best showing, third round runs in 2008 and 2013. Her chances of doing so were boosted by Friday's draw, which placed her in arguably the most open quarter and the talented but green Ashleigh Barty as her first opponent.

The Turning Point
If Cornet was struggling with the weight of expectation that accompanies the leading French players at their home major then she hid it well, surging out into an early lead before sealing the set with a pair of stylish forehand winners. She continued to call all the shots in the second, taking advantage of her increasingly disillusioned opponent's regular unforced errors to complete a 6-2, 6-1 victory in under an hour.

Quotes
"The French crowd was great today," Cornet said. "I think that with every year the crowd gets nicer and nicer with me. And I think, you know, you just have to try to encourage them to get behind you by just fighting on every point and just giving them some emotion.

"I think the French crowd is a tough one, but when you have it with you, it's unbelievable. When you play on such a big court as Philippe Chatrier, it can give you wings.

"Today was not a really tight match, but I felt like the crowd was always behind me and it felt really good."

What's Next
In the second round, another talented youngster awaits, in the form of Taylor Townsend, who recovered from 5-1 down in the opening set to defeat Vania King, 7-5, 6-1.
