French No.2 Garcia came into the French Open ranked a career-high No.43, with her season highlighted by her first WTA title in Bogotá and her first two Top 10 wins.
And former World No.1 and 2008 Roland Garros winner Ivanovic is in her best form in years, with her season already including two WTA titles, wins over Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova and deep runs at each of her pre-Roland Garros clay court events. She also came into this tournament seventh on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
Ivanovic was never in trouble, getting out to a 4-0 first set lead, a 5-2 second set lead and finishing off her 6-1, 6-3 triumph in style with an ace.
By The Numbers
Ivanovic won 73% of her first serve points compared to 50% for Garcia. And her 18 unforced errors were far less than Garcia's 34.
Ivanovic is now 34-4 in Grand Slam openers and 9-1 in Roland Garros openers. And with her 31st win of the year, she moved back into a tie with Agnieszka Radwanska and Carla Suárez Navarro for most on the WTA.
"I expected a very tough match," Ivanovic said. "Especially since she's been playing really well on clay. It was the first time we played against each other, but I just stuck with the tactics that I talked about with my coach. I started off really well and aggressively, and I sort of felt I was on top of her for the rest of the match. This gives me lots of confidence, and I'm really happy with the win.
"The last few weeks I have really played some good tennis. I beat a lot of top players. That's what you need before you get to a Grand Slam. It's important to work through these tough matches and try to build on that."
"I have experienced many things recently," Garcia said. "I have made lots of progress and have gone through many emotions. Today it probably was a bit too much for me. I'm going to take as much as I can from this experience. Ivanovic played a very good match and didn't give me any opportunities."
Ivanovic takes on the WTA's top-ranked teen, Elina Svitolina, whom she is 3-0 against.
