PARIS, France - All the favorites in first round doubles action on Thursday at the French Open won in straight sets, led by top-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.

Though they have picked up titles in Doha and Indian Wells this season, Hsieh and Peng haven't quite matched their success from 2013, when they captured five WTA-level titles - including Wimbledon and the WTA Championships. In fact, since Indian Wells they had lost three of their four openers before this week and came into Roland Garros fifth on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.

But Hsieh and Peng, ranked No.2 and No.1 on the doubles rankings, respectively, looked back in title-winning form in their 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Samantha Stosur - their third victory in three meetings with the Russian-Australian duo. Kuznetsova and Stosur can take solace that they are both still alive in singles.

Next up for Hsieh and Peng are Vera Dushevina and Zheng Saisai.

Also advancing were No.2 seeds and four-time Grand Slam champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, No.3 seeds and defending champs Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, No.5 seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza, No.6 seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, No.7 seeds and three-time Grand Slam runners-up Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua, No.12 seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Flavia Pennetta and No.14 seeds Klara Koukalova and Monica Niculescu.

There were two upsets, with Dominika Cibulkova and Kirsten Flipkens 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 winners over eighth-seeded Germans Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, and Kimiko Date-Krumm and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-4, 6-2 victors over 11th-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova. Date-Krumm and Zahlavova Strycova had managed just three games against Medina Garrigues and Shvedova in their lone previous encounter in Miami earlier this year.
