PARIS, France - Sara Errani produced a brilliant display of counterpunching to defeat Jelena Jankovic, 7-6(5), 6-2, and reach her third straight Roland Garros quarterfinal.

The Plot
Shock first week losses for several of the pre-tournament favorites had left the path to the title in Paris invitingly open for No.6 seed Jankovic. But before she could contemplate a serious tilt at the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen, she would have to first see off former runner-up Errani.

The Turning Point
With music's ultimate showman, Prince, watching on from the sides, Errani was intent on putting on a performance and was at her ebullient best from the word go. In an opening set that ebbed and flowed right until the final point, it was Errani that came out on top. Jankovic had her chances, most notably when she held a set point at 6-5, yet every time she pushed the door open the Italian would scurry into view to slam it shut.

When an increasingly agitated Jankovic was broken to love at the start of the second, the end looked in sight. The Serb reduced the deficit to 3-2, but she could never completely subdue Errani, who hit back to take the next three games.

Quotes
"It was an unbelievably tough match today," Errani said. "All the points were very tough. I just tried to be focused. I was 4-1 up and then she started to play much better and it was not easy to stay there with her. Of course, it was very important to win that first set. I'm so happy to get through to the quarterfinals here again."

What's Next
Facing Errani for a place in the semifinals will be Andrea Petkovic, who continued her 2014 resurgence with a three-set win over qualifier Kiki Bertens.
