May 2014 WTA Player Of The Month Finalists

Maria Sharapova: Sharapova continued her tremendous clay court run picking up her second Roland Garros crown in three years and first Mutua Madrid Open title. In Madrid she defeated three straight Top 5 players (Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Simona Halep). In the final against Halep she dropped the opening set then stormed back to win the Mutua Madrid Open title. Despite falling in the third round of Rome, Sharapova entered Roland Garros as one of the heavy favorites. After an easy opening three matches, it was tough sledding all the way to the title. Sharapova won four straight three-setters against Samantha Stosur, Garbiñe Muguruza, Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep. To quote Sharapova, "It was the toughest Grand Slam final I have ever played."

Simona Halep: Halep proved she is here to stay after an excellent month. Simona went 12-2, reaching the two biggest finals of her career. Halep's first WTA Premier Mandatory final in Madrid and then her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. Halep recorded four Top 20 wins (Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic, Petra Kvitova and Sloane Stephens) before falling to Maria Sharapova in both finals.

Serena Williams: Williams had an up-and-down month going 9-2, winning her second straight Rome title. She entered Madrid as defending champion, but had to withdraw before her quarterfinal match due to a left thigh injury. She entered Rome as a question mark, but was back to her World No.1 form, defeating the red-hot Ana Ivanovic in three sets then easily defeated Italian No.1 Sara Errani in the final. Williams entered Roland Garros as the favorite, but was shocked in the second round by WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza.
