Leading the way was 11th-seeded Madison Keys, who at 3-3 in the first set against Brazilian No.1 Teliana Pereira reeled off five straight games en route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory. She was especially dominant on her first serve, winning 28 of 33 points.

"I feel like the grass court season is way too short and you have to soak up every second of it," Keys said. "I'm really happy to be back out there and I'm happy to get a first round win."

Fellow American WTA Rising Stars Victoria Duval, Alison Riske, Lauren Davis and CoCo Vandeweghe joined Keys in the second round.

Duval won five straight games from 2-1 down in the first set of her 6-2, 6-4 defeat of No.13 seed and World No.45 Caroline Garcia. It was the second-best win of her career, trailing just her upset of World No.11 Samantha Stosur at last year's US Open.

Fifteenth-seeded Riske was a 7-6(3), 6-3 winner over Lyudmyla Kichenok on the day she cracked the Top 40. She is no stranger to success here, as her best two WTA outings have come in Birmingham - semifinal showings in 2010 and 2013.

Davis edged Tamira Paszek, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. And Vandeweghe beat Zarina Diyas, 6-4, 7-5.

Finally, yet another American, Varvara Lepchenko, was a 6-4, 6-0 victor over Alison Van Uytvanck.

There were some non-American winners too. No.9 seed Zhang Shuai came back from a 4-2 first set deficit and a 3-1 second set deficit in her 7-5, 6-4 victory over Eleni Daniilidou. Yanina Wickmayer upended No.10 seed Bojana Jovanovski, 6-4, 6-4, her fourth win in four meetings with the Serb. In a battle of WTA Rising Stars, Belinda Bencic topped 2013 Birmingham runner-up Donna Vekic, 6-4, 6-4. And Francesca Schiavone was triumphant over Zheng Jie, 6-3, 6-4.
