'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands - WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza's recent success continued with a straight set defeat of Dutch wildcard Lesley Kerkhova in the first round of the Topshelf Open on Monday.

Down an early break at 3-1 in the first set, the seventh-seeded Muguruza won seven of the next eight games en route to a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

"I was nervous because it was my first match on grass this season and I was playing a girl I didn't know," Muguruza said. "So I had to see how she played in warm-ups, and her game looked really good on grass. In the first set, I started really badly. But then I got more confidence and played better."

Muguruza, who reached her first WTA semifinal here last year, was playing for the first time since her quarterfinal run at the French Open - which included a second round upset of Serena Williams.

Another player with past success here, 2013 runner-up and 2010 and 2012 semifinalist Kirsten Flipkens, was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Polona Hercog. The sixth-seeded Flipkens converted on all four of her break points, lost only three points on her first serve, and from 4-4 in the first set did not surrender another game.

No.8 seed Klara Koukalova, who captured her first WTA title here in 2005, rallied from a 5-2 first set deficit en route to a 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2 win over María-Teresa Torró-Flor. It was a measure of revenge for the Czech, as she just lost to Torró-Flor in her Roland Garros opener three weeks ago.

Nobody had a better day than Dutch wildcard Michaella Krajicek. The 2006 's-Hertogenbosch champion fired 11 aces in her 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 triumph over Jana Cepelova for her first WTA main draw win since the first round here a year ago. Then her boyfriend, German ATP World Tour player Martin Emmrich, proposed on court and Krajicek said yes.
