BUCHAREST, Romania & BAD GASTEIN, Austria - Romanian tennis will take center stage with this week's inaugural Bucharest Open, where Romanian No.1 and World No.3 Simona Halep will be receiving plenty of attention.
"We are very happy to be able to bring together in Bucharest the greatest names of worldwide women's tennis," said George Cosac, President of the Romanian Tennis Federation, which organized the tournament. "This is the first time the federation is running a WTA tournament in Romania and we are very proud that the list of players includes great names of Romanian tennis, such as Simona Halep. We will witness a top-quality sports show and we are convinced the Romanian audience will enjoy a memorable experience."
"I have played so many times in important tournaments outside the country and I've always wanted to be able to play a WTA tournament organized in my home country," Halep said. "I am happy I now have this opportunity."
Seven of No.1 seed Pennetta's 10 WTA titles have come on the dirt. Fellow Italian Errani also loves this surface, on which six of her seven WTA titles have come. Suárez Navarro's lone WTA title came earlier this year on the red clay of Oeiras. And all three of Petkovic's WTA titles have come on clay, including her first one here in 2009.
Goerges and Pennetta are teaming up in doubles and are the top seeds. The Pliskova sisters are seeded second.
