BAD GASTEIN, Austria - Sara Errani bounced back from a disappointing grass court season with a first round win at the NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies on Tuesday.

The All-England Club has never been the happiest of hunting grounds in singles for Errani, and this year proved no different as she came within a point of victory only to lose in the first round to Caroline Garcia.

But back on her beloved clay and she outclassed qualifier Katerina Siniakova, 6-3, 6-2, for the 400th win of her career. After Flavia Pennetta's withdrawal, Errani is the highest-ranked player in the draw and in the second round she will face Paula Ormaechea, who defeated Jovana Jaksic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Earlier in the day, defending champion and No.6 seed Yvonne Meusburger staged a late comeback to avoid a surprise opening round exit. Austrian No.1 Meusburger has never lost before the quarterfinals at her home event, but came perilously close against Tereza Smitkova, recovering from 5-3 down in the final set to eventually triumph, 7-6(9), 4-6, 7-5.

Also made to work hard for their place in the second round were fellow seeds Carla Suárez Navarro and Andrea Petkovic. No.3 seed Suárez Navarro recovered from a mid-match wobble to defeat Laura Siegemund, 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4, while No.4 seed and 2009 winner Petkovic overcame Jana Cepelova, 7-6(8), 7-5.
