CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears were among the first round doubles winners on Monday at the Western & Southern Open.

The Americans were in especially good form against Caroline Garcia and Monica Niculescu, as they broke serve in five of their opponents' eight service games, won 15 of 19 points on their opponents' second serve and saved all three break points on their own serve en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Kops-Jones and Spears have had a solid start to their North American summer hardcourt swing, reaching the semifinals in Stanford two weeks ago and then the quarterfinals in Montréal last week. They came into Cincinnati fifth on the Road To Singapore doubles leaderboard, with eight teams set to qualify for October's BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

In seventh place on the leaderboard are WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro. They made a mini-comeback from 4-2 down in the first set and down 3-2 in the second set, the Spaniards won four straight games for a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Andreja Klepac and Sílvia Soler-Espinosa.

Also advancing were Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Karolina Pliskova, and Daniela Hantuchova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Jans-Ignacik and Pliskova won six of seven games from 3-0 down in the second set in their 7-5, 6-4 triumph over American wildcards Nicole Gibbs and Alison Riske. Hantuchova and Zahlavova Strycova were 6-2, 6-1 winners over Lucie Hradecka and Michaella Krajicek in 54 minutes to set up a second round encounter with No.1 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, who are fresh off their WTA-leading fifth title of the season at the Rogers Cup.
