Saturday, Third Round
Arthur Ashe Stadium
Flavia Pennetta (ITA #12) vs. [WC] Nicole Gibbs (USA #135)
Head-to-head: Pennetta leads 1-0
Twelve months ago, Flavia Pennetta and Nicole Gibbs met on an outside court in the opening round of the US Open. On Saturday morning they will venture onto the largest arena in tennis, this time battling out for a place in the fourth round.
Pennetta emerged triumphant first time around and went on to reach her maiden Grand Slam semifinal. Since then, the Italian, who made her name on clay, has continued this knack of excelling at the big hardcourt events, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and then this spring emerging as a surprise Indian Wells champion. By contrast, former NCAA champion Gibbs has mostly plied her trade on the ITF Circuit and came into the tournament without a main draw win at a major.
Victoria Azarenka (BLR #17) vs. Elena Vesnina (RUS #56)
Head-to-head: Azarenka leads 5-0
It has been a difficult year for Elena Vesnina, who arrived in Flushing Meadows without back to back main draw wins since the end of April. However, the Russian has never been one to shy away from a challenge and has showed no shortage of will - or skill - in ending this run thanks to a gutsy second round victory over Marina Erakovic.
Next up is former No.1 Victoria Azarenka, who, due to her ailing body, has also had a season to forget. Vesnina is yet to take a set from Azarenka in five career meetings, a statistics that underline the task ahead of her if she wants to reach the fourth round in New York for the first time
Stat to watch: Azarenka is bidding to register her 100th Grand Slam win.
