NEW YORK, NY, USA - Kayla Day converted her early US Open success into a big win in the junior event, capturing the girl's singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Viktoria Kuzmova.

Day earned a wildcard into the main draw of the women's singles event by winning the USTA Girls 18s Nationals event earlier this summer. Once there, the 16-year-old lefty made a splash by taking out fellow American Madison Brengle and reaching the second round, where she fell to Madison Keys in straight sets.

"I think mentally it was a little bit hard just because it's such a long time being here," she said after the match. "I have been here for I think over three weeks.

"But my coach told me I needed to separate the two tournaments, like to really make sure when I come back to play juniors like I'm coming to play a new tournament."

Putting aside the women's singles event, Day set the junior draw alight to win her first Grand Slam title and ascend to the ITF No.1, supplanting Wimbledon winner Anastasia Potapova.

"It means so much. It's really great. I knew that coming into the match an American girl hadn't won a junior slam in four years, so it means so much to me to be able to play for America and win."
