KOCKELSCHEUER, Luxembourg - Second seed Kiki Bertens dismissed Denisa Allertova in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to secure her place in the second round of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open.
"I think I played well today and happy with my serve," Bertens said afterwards. "I started the second set a bit slow, but I was able to come back when I was down and it was thanks to my serve, which I think was the key today."
Bertens brushed off early break points and proceeded to make in-roads on the Allertova serve before using her forehand to great effect.
It was Allertova who came out of the blocks quickest in the second set, though, breaking the Dutch player's serve and then holding to love to consolidate her lead.
But Bertens was not to be thwarted, using her strength to break right back.
And she stayed with her opponent, leveling up at 5-5 before breaking once more and then serving it out to secure her place in the second round.
Elsewhere, Heather Watson got her first win at Tour level since Wimbledon when she beat Yanina Wickmayer, 6-2, 6-1, and Sweden's Johanna Larsson marked her rise up the rankings by beating Eugenie Bouchard 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
