SINGAPORE - Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic kicked off their 2018 doubles season by winning the first Slam of the year at the Australian Open and they finished it off by winning the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
The duo, who qualified for the WTA Finals in 2015 before splitting, reunited for 2018 and picked up right where they left off. In addition to winning the Australian Open, Babos' first major doubles title, they went on to make the Indian Wells semifinals, Madrid final, French Open quarterfinals, Wimbledon quarterfinals, and US Open final. Their consistency throughout the season allowed them to finish just 110 points behind World No.1s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
"It's an amazing feeling, to share it with Kiki," Babos said on the WTA Insider Podcast. "I experienced this moment last year but at the beginning of the season it was the opposite: she was already a Grand Slam champion and I was the newcomer.
"To reach all these things together and to aim for more is a great feeling, an amazing experience, and a lot of love and joy. We cannot be more proud and happy than we are now."
On her way to helping Babos defend her 2017 title in Singapore, Mladenovic finally got her hands on the Martina Navratilova Trophy, having qualified for Singapore twice previously.
"I couldn't ask for better," Mladenovic said. "If there was one person that I would like to share this title with it's Timea. It's amazing.
"It's such a prestigious event to be a part of already. I think every single player out there is just proud to make it and be here because it really is the best of the game. To get to the finish line and hold the trophy, I cannot describe to you exactly all the emotions. "It's something big.
"It's the best in your sport and you see all those important people around, it's all those tough days and lessons and hard work and sweat, it's special to have her by my side and to fight together. I'm extremely proud of ourselves for our entire season."
