PARIS, France - French wildcards Julie Coin and Pauline Parmentier caused the first major upset in the doubles draw at Roland Garros when they knocked out defending champions and No.3 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
Parmentier, who is also into the fourth round of the singles, is enjoying a tournament to remember, and her good form has obviously rubbed off on her partner, Coin.
On their two previous appearances at their home major, Parmentier and Coin have never been beyond the second round, but buoyed by a partisan crowd on Court 3 they produced some sparkling tennis to run out 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 winners.
Makarova and Vesnina were not the only big name casualties, either. No.6 seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears also suffered a surprise second round loss, failing to capitalize on a bright start as they went down to Irina-Camelia Begu and Karin Knapp, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Also advancing were 2010 runners-up Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, 7-6(2), 6-4 winners over Oksana Kalashnikova and Katarzyna Piter, and Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua, who defeated Jana Cepelova and Stefanie Voegele, 6-1, 6-2.
