CINCINNATI, OH, USA - With the Top 4 seeds out before the semis, some unheralded teams were still standing on Saturday - and it was the No.6 and No.7 seeds who made it to the doubles final in Cincy.
Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, the No.6 seeds, were the first pair to advance to the title match, rebounding from a second set disaster - and clawing back from an early 3-1 deficit in the match tie-break - to beat veteran doubles pair Kimiko Date-Krumm and Andrea Hlavackova, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.
Babos and Mladenovic are looking for their first WTA doubles title together. They've made two WTA doubles finals together before but finished runners-up both times, both this year, at Paris [Indoors] (to Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke) and Wimbledon (to Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci).
The other semifinal took place later in the day and saw the No.7 seeds, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, score a 7-5, 7-5 victory against the No.8 seeds, Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova. The first set was all service holds until the last game, when Kops-Jones and Spears broke Rodionova's serve - the Americans came from a break down twice to win the second set and, of course, the match.
Kops-Jones and Spears are looking for their 10th WTA doubles title together. Their first nine came at Oeiras in 2009, Québec City in 2011, Carlsbad, Seoul, Tokyo [Pan Pacific] and Osaka in 2012, Stanford and Carlsbad in 2013 and Birmingham this year. They are 9-6 in WTA doubles finals together.
This will be a first-time meeting between these two doubles teams.
