No.9 seed overcomes Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets to set up second-round meeting with home favorite Kurumi Nara.

TOKYO, Japan - Caroline Garcia cruised into the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Tuesday, beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 6-3.

The No.9 seed overcame two early breaks of serve against the stubborn Belarusian, ranked 66 places below her, in the first set to level at 4-4 before securing it on her fourth set point. 

The Frenchwoman, 23, was first to strike in the second set, breaking Sasnovich in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead before another quickfire trade of breaks. Garcia emerged 4-2 ahead and saw out the set to secure her place in the tournament's last 16 for the first time with victory in 84 minutes. Her previous visits, in 2012 and 2015, had ended at the first-round stage.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova came from a set down to beat Catherine Bellis, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, and confirm a second-round meeting with Wang Qiang, conqueror of eighth seed Kristina Mladenovic.

Daria Kasatkina also had to recover from a deficit to beat American qualifier Madison Brengle 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and take her place against Angelique Kerber in round two, while Monica Puig will take on World No.1 Garbiñe Muguruza after beating qualifier Hsieh Su-wei 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Shelby Rogers beat wildcard Risa Ozaki 6-2, 7-6 to secure a second-round match with holder Caroline Wozniacki, while Daria Gavrilova went down 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 to Magda Linette - who will now take on Karolina Pliskova. Katerina Siniakova overcame Jana Cepelova 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Barbora Strycova beat Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6, 7-6 and will face Johanna Konta in the next round.
