Top seed Alizé Cornet needs to mount a serious comeback on Tuesday if she hopes to turn around her rain-interrupted match against Jennifer Brady. Brady led 6-0, 2-1 over the 2014 Guangzhou International Women's Open finalist before play was suspended.
Two-time and reigning Guangzhou champion Zhang Shuai (titles in 2013 and 2017) will start her championship defense against her compatriot Wang Yafan. Wang just missed being seeded in Guangzhou and, like Zhang, is one of the five Chinese players ranked in the Top 100. Zhang won their only prior meeting in straight sets, in 2013.
Monday result: Lisicki leaps past Zvonareva in Guangzhou opener
Zhang’s beaten rival in last year’s final, No.4 seed Aleksandra Krunic, starts her 2018 Guangzhou campaign against Viktorija Golubic. This will be the first meeting between the two 25-year-olds.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova received a wild card into the event. The former World No.2 from Russia picked up her first title in nearly two years in Washington earlier this summer. Kuznetsova meets Indian qualifier Karman Thandi in the opening round, in their first meeting.
