MONTRÉAL, Canada - No.2 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai and No.5 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina were victorious on Thursday at the Rogers Cup to set up a rematch of the 2013 WTA Finals final.
Hsieh and Peng rallied from a 5-2 second set deficit and fought off three set points in their 6-3, 7-6(2) second round defeat of Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro - their second straight win over the Spaniards after falling in their initial encounter.
Makarova and Vesnina won by a similar score over Gabriela Dabrowski and Shahar Peer, 6-2, 7-6(5), converting of five of seven break points in the process. Makarova is also through to the quarterfinals in singles, having beaten Vesnina on Wednesday and Petra Kvitova on Thursday.
Hsieh and Peng have gotten the better of Makarova and Vesnina in both of their previous meetings - in the semifinals of Cincinnati last year and in the final of last year's season finale in Istanbul.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta. They broke serve three times and fought off all five break points they faced in their 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova.
