BEIJING, China - Jelena Ostapenko strode past Samantha Stosur in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to reach the China Open round of 16 with her 40th match win of the year.
The French Open champion broke her opponent's serve in the first game of the match, and was dominant from there.
"It was a tough match today - Sam was playing pretty well, and it was hard to win the second set, but in general I'm happy with the way I played today and happy to be in the third round," Ostapenko said afterwards.
The Australian did well to save break points throughout the first set in the face of power and aggression from Ostapenko; but then gifted her a 5-2 lead with a double fault.
Despite Stosur breaking back immediately, she could not win a single point on her next service game, allowing Ostapenko to take the set.
Stosur made the better start to the second set, using her forehand brilliantly to take her fifth break point in a game that lasted ten minutes.
The 20-year-old broke right back, though, to get matters back on serve; and broke again in a lengthy fourth game of the set to extend her lead.
The pair exchanged breaks before Stosur finally held to even things up at 4-4, but Ostapenko's determination combined with her opponent's plethora of unforced errors to hand her a straight-sets victory.
