Petkovic saved the only break point she faced and broke serve four times herself to beat her fellow German in a 48-minute drubbing on Stadium Court. It was the first time the pair played each other.
"Players like Mona, who play that fast and are unpredictable, can come back at any time, so if I had dropped my intensity for one second it wouldn't have turned out like this," Petkovic said. "The key to winning today was the first three games. I held my serve after facing break point and then after that I got really comfortable on my serve - I was happy I started off great and then kept it up, too."
What are Petkovic's feelings about getting back onto hardcourts for the summer hardcourt season?
"In the beginning, when you come on hardcourts the first couple of weeks, it's tough on the body. But it hasn't taken a toll on my body yet, and it's also a great challenge for me to win the points after one or two shots, just being able to open up the court in my matches and finish the points quite early."
The former Top 10 player is also feeling good, mentally and physically, for said summer season.
"Mentally I'm really happy to be back on the court and I'm really fresh and hungry for wins," she said. "Just playing matches feels good - the losses don't even hurt as much as they used to hurt.
"This is the first time in a long time where I'm feeling healthy, too. I wouldn't say it's perfect, but I would say almost 100%. At least this is the first tournament this year where I almost feel 100%."
Another player who was on the show court schedule on Wednesday was Tommy Haas, Germany's No.1 player on the men's side. Petkovic was asked about the veteran in her post-match presser.
"I can relate to his story so much, with all his injuries and the setbacks, and comebacks and more setbacks. He's such an inspiration for me because he's 10 years older than me and yet he's there and doing so well. He's just awesome. I've doubted myself before, if I could ever come back from my injuries, but seeing what he's capable of at 35 is just incredible, and again, it's an inspiration to me.
"What everyone doesn't see is that when you have so many surgeries, you have to do all of these prevention exercises each day. The more injuries you get, the more exercises you have to do. Each day he does two hours in the gym just for prevention stuff, building up the little muscles and stabilizing everything. But if you keep wanting it and keep working hard, you can do it, like he is doing it.
"I'm probably his biggest fan."
