KATOWICE, Poland - Karolina Pliskova and Kristyna Pliskova are starting to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the WTA doubles circuit. They have reached four semifinals since the start of 2012 and then on Tuesday had their biggest victory to date by taking out No.1 seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Janette Husarova in their opener at the BNP Paribas Katowice Open.
Will the Czechs be the newest members of the list of sisters to have won WTA doubles titles together? There are only eight duos to have accomplished this feat, starting with the Evert sisters at St. Petersburg in 1973 and the latest instance being the Chan sisters at Shenzhen earlier this year.
Only two of the duos were triumphant at Grand Slams - the 13-time Grand Slam champion Williamses and the 2008 Australian Open-winning Bondarenkos. Here is the complete list:
|Serena Williams & Venus Williams (USA)||21|
|Alona Bondarenko & Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR)||3|
|Chris Evert & Jeanne Evert (USA)||1|
|Chan Hao-Ching & Chan Yung-Jan (TPE)||1|
|Katerina Maleeva & Manuela Maleeva-Fragnière (BUL)||1|
|Cammy MacGregor & Cynthia MacGregor (USA)||1|
|Agnieszka Radwanska & Urszula Radwanska (POL)||1|
