MATCH POINTS

Compatriots Daria Gavrilova and Ashleigh Barty have only faced each other twice, in very different circumstances. Their first encounter was in 2012, in the semifinals of the ITF $25,000 tournament in Traralgon; a 16-year-old Barty, ranked No.220, defeated an 18-year-old No.231-ranked Gavrilova 7-5, 7-5 (and would go on to win the title). Five years later, in a year both would finish inside the Top 30, the pair met again in the Strasbourg quarterfinals, and Gavrilova got her revenge 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(5).

Camila Giorgi is the fourth qualifier in the past five years to play the Sydney International semifinals. Two of the previous three won their semifinal match - eventual 2014 champion Tsvetana Pironkova and Monica Puig in 2015.

Angelique Kerber is unbeaten in seven matches so far in 2018, and holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Camila Giorgi - including their only meeting on Australian soil, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 win in the first round of Brisbane in 2016.

Daria Gavrilova and Ashleigh Barty each have two Premier-level finals under their belts. Gavrilova was the Moscow runner-up in 2016 and New Haven champion in 2017, while Barty lost both the Birmingham and Wuhan finals last year. Camila Giorgi has only played one prior Premier semifinal - New Haven 2012, which she lost to Magdalena Rybarikova.

Angelique Kerber is a 10-time WTA titlist, eight at Premier level or above, but is looking for her first trophy since the 2016 US Open.
