AUCKLAND, New Zealand – WTA World No.3 Caroline Wozniacki will return to the ASB Classic 2019 in Auckland, while Venus Williams is among the other stars to have confirmed for the tournament.
Wozniacki, who won the Australian Open last year, was the runner-up in the tournament 12 months ago, as she lost, 6-4, 7-6(4), to Germany’s Julia Goerges in the final.
The WTA World No.14 will defend her title and is the second-highest ranked player in the draw.
Prior to 2018, Wozniacki had reached the final of the event in 2015, when she was defeated, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Venus, who has been a regular in New Zealand over the years and will return after a one-year hiatus.
Former WTA World No.1 Victoria Azarenka will return for the first time since 2006, while Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig is also present.
Eugenie Bouchard, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist, has also confirmed her presence after a strong conclusion to her 2018 season.
“I am really excited to be coming back to Auckland,” the Canadian said. “I went there when I was very young and remember it being so beautiful. I’ll be focused and ready to go, but I hope to see a little more of Auckland this time around.
“I felt really strong in my last couple of tournaments and it was nice to reach a semifinal at the highest level again. I know how to be a Top 10 player and I feel like I’m doing all the right things to reach my goals in 2019.”
Meanwhile, tournament director Karl Budge is delighted with the line up for the event.
“Genie is icing on the cake of what is going to be an incredible women’s field this year,” he said. “Three former WTA World No.1s, three Grand Slam champions, our defending champion, the Olympic gold medalist and now one of the biggest names in the sport, it is going to be huge.”
The tournament begins on December 31 and runs until January 6.
