Following an up and down start to the year for Wozniacki, a quarterfinal run in Miami signaled a return to form and on Wednesday she delivered another polished performance to see off Mladenovic. Wozniacki came racing out of the blocks, winning the first five games, and, despite an improved showing from Mladenovic in the second set, she wrapped up a 63 64 win after just one hour, 21 minutes.

"I always take it one match at a time, just do my best and see what happens," Wozniacki said. "I started off really strongly, played aggressively, took the ball early, served well and returned well.

"I just kept my head cool because I knew that Kristina was a girl with a big serve and a big game, and on these fast courts it's never easy."

Next up for the No.3 seed will be another big server, Karolina Pliskova, who hit 16 aces on her way to a 46 62 63 win over Donna Vekic.

Also advancing to the last eight were the evergreen Kimiko Date-Krumm and Jovana Jaksic. On Monday, Date-Krumm rolled back the years to upset top seed Flavia Pennetta and she followed this up with a 64 67(4) 64 win over 2012 champion Timea Babos.

Jaksic, whose best previous showing at a WTA event was a second round run at the same venue 12 months ago, was made to work even harder, fending off three match points in the second set before eventually seeing off qualifier Luksika Kumkhum, 36 76(5) 76(2).
