There's something about Siegemund in Stuttgart.
A year after reaching her first WTA final as a qualifier, Laura Siegemund returned to the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix with a wildcard and a dream, one she made come true with another emphatic run to the championship match.
"It’s unbelievable for me, and it can’t get much better than this, really," she told WTA Insider in her Champions Corner interview. "I’m just so proud, and so happy that I could give something back to the people. I have so many supporters here, and the atmosphere the fans create here is unbelievable. I’m just happy that I could give it back to them in this way."
Up against a surging Kristina Mladenovic in the final, Siegemund fought off the in-form Frenchwoman to play a fearless third set tiebreak, taking home her second career title in one of the game's toughest fields.
"I think the match against Pliskova really showed me that I can play very aggressive tennis," she said of her first of three Top 10 wins last week over Karolina Pliskova. "It’s a nice add-on, the dropshots, and people love to see them. But I’m actually just a very aggressive player, and I have to remember the way I played against her. That can be a big step up in my game plan."
Moving back into the Top 30, Siegemund drove off after a week to remember, and earned the mantle of April's WTA Player of the Month!
