MOSCOW, Russia - Anna Chakvetadze, who made it as high as No.5 in the world in 2007 but had struggled in the years since due to a combination of personal issues, illness and injury, announced her retirement from pro tennis earlier this year - read about it here and see her highlights in photos here.
Last week we asked you to send in your goodbye messages for the Russian - here are a few of them...
Thanks for the memories. Good luck for the future :) You were one of my favourite Russian players. Thanks again.
- Utkarsh, India
Good luck Anna,
I'll miss your feisty "don't mess with me" attitude and those beautiful groundstrokes. You did Russia and the WTA proud - all the best from Australia, we miss you down here!!
This is such sad news. Anna's signed picture has always been my mousemat and will always be. I last saw Anna play live in Rome in 2011 and hoped she could return to the top. I hope she can now find true happiness in whatever she is planning to do and that her back troubles do not last long. I hope she will do some media work and we will see her at Wimbledon again.
Lots of love and good luck Anna,
- Phil, England
I have been a fan of yours since I started following tennis. I was the only voice screaming for you amidst the Slovene crowd in Portoroz that night you came back from 6-0 down to Polona Hercog. Your retirement was a very sad news to receive, but it was for the best and I hope you will find happiness in whatever you plan on doing in your life now. As I have now started working as a sports journalist I hope one day to meet you again commentating a tournament.
All the best,
