ZHUHAI, China - The stars and stripes are still on course to shine in Zhuhai; after a banner week at the US Open, three Americans are firmly in the mix for a spot at the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai.
French No.1 Kristina Mladenovic is still sitting at No.1, with the American trio of Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and CoCo Vandeweghe not far behind. But now that the dust has settled after the year’s last Grand Slam, there are new faces shining on the International stage that are set to make waves on the leaderboard.
Despite falling in the semifinals of the Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec City, World No.28 Lucie Safarova’s stellar run has put her in contention for a spot on the Zhuhai leaderboard. The move unseats Julia Goerges - but the German is only 5 points behind Peng Shuai, which sets up a fierce battle for one of the last 12 spots.
