2011 marked the 41st year of competition for the Bank of the West Classic, making it the longest running women's-only tennis tournament in the world. Held in the magnificent setting of Stanford University in July, the event is the first women's stop of the US Open Series.
The 2011 winner was Serena Williams in what was her third tournament back after a year-long absence from the game and her first title since Wimbledon in 2010. Martina Navratilova has the event record with six singles titles.
